DIY Feature

All that is required to pick your own fruit is a little elbow grease!

If you have surplus fruit or vegetables growing on your property you cannot eat but are able to pick yourself, Food Forward can connect you with a nearby hunger relief agency. Your hard work to grow and harvest fresh produce can directly impact those in need in your community. Harvesting your own fruit is the best way to guarantee it will not go to waste!

There is no special equipment required (your hands and any boxes or bags work just fine!), although you are welcome to borrow fruit pickers or boxes from our offices in North Hollywood and Ventura, or one of our satellite hubs, if necessary. Due to the volume and proximity of the homeowners we work with, we are unable to drop off any harvesting supplies.

PLEASE NOTE: We kindly ask all DIY harvesters to reach out to Food Forward at least 5 days prior to picking your fruit to allow our staff to find a local hunger relief agency that can use your produce. If you reach out to us after you harvest, it is unlikely we will be able to assist you.

You can view a step-by-step guide in our DIY Harvest Instructions document and learn about specific varieties in our Fruit Profiles Harvest Guide.
