The Produce Pick-Up program was formally launched in 2017, and was Food Forward’s first-ever direct service initiative. In partnership with local community organizations, the Produce Pick-Ups provide fresh fruits and vegetables, free of charge, to families, individuals, and communities facing particular food security challenges like scarce access to grocery stores and low median income.
How does it work?
Approximately 8,000-15,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables sourced by Food Forward’s Wholesale Recovery program are given out at Produce Pick-Up sites in Watts, South Los Angeles, and Simi Valley on a monthly or twice-monthly basis. They are made possible with volunteer power and in collaboration with four partners: Watts Labor Community Action Committee, Social Justice Learning Institute, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and UMMA Community Clinic, and Simi at the Garden. To meet the needs of each neighborhood being served, five to eight varieties of fresh produce are given out through a market-style distribution or in pre-packed bags. All Produce Pick-Up events are completely free and open to the public.
