Introducing the New Harvest Coordinator!

Hi Fruit Loops! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself!  My name is Brenna and I will be serving as the new Harvest Coordinator for Food Forward.  For the past three years I have been in the garden, teaching elementary school students the importance of growing and eating their own food.  Although garden education is still a passion, I am excited to put down the garden trowel and be a part of the amazing community at Food Forward.

My interest in urban agriculture has its beginnings in Santa Cruz, where I attended UCSC for my undergraduate career.  I received a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on sustainable agroecology.  I spent the final years studying on the large farm on campus and becoming familiar with California growing seasons and varieties.  After graduation I moved back to Los Angeles and began gardening for people’s homes and eventually teaching at elementary schools.  When I saw the impact gardens and fresh food have in the everyday lives of the children, I wanted to learn how to translate these benefits to the community or city level.  I returned to school and received a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from Cal Poly Pomona in Spring 2012.  During my graduate career, I applied the skills I learned in strategic and communicative planning to analyze the Los Angeles food system.  My thesis project focused on community orchards and provided a strategy for creating and sustaining community orchard projects in Los Angeles.

Even though I have only been a part of Food Forward for a short time, I am amazed at the generosity and goodwill of Angelenos.  We have a dynamic group of volunteers who donate their time as property scouts, pick leaders, and pickers.  We have a hospitable group of property owners who allow us to come into their homes and donate their fruit to those in need.  We have a hardworking group of receiving agencies that provide food to those who are in the most need.  I am excited to get to know each of you and I am thankful for all the work you do for Food Forward!  I look forward to all the picks in the year to come!
