Ventura County mid year progress 2012

Halfway through 2012 and I can say that grass doesn’t grow under our feet out here in Ventura County!

It’s been a fast 6 months- whew! and VC has made huge progress in growing our county’s FF branch.  We’ve been building community with FOOD Share, one of our new food sourcing partners. And along with our International Paper partners, we enjoyed a joint pick event in June- harvesting over 6,500 lbs of Valencia juciness for our county’s hungry.

Our great partners in Ventura County, International Paper, in addition to donating their 50 trees, produced and donated our beautiful pick boxes that are used at every pick from LA and OC to VC, Inland Empire and Santa Barbara County. We thank you for your tremendous contribution to our mission.

We’ve been pickin’ and clippin’ from Goleta to Fillmore, Ventura to Moorpark and lots of towns in between. All thanks to our dedicated volunteers led by our super Pick Leaders Joanne, Susan, Amy and Daniel who lead the charge every month into backyards and orchards. Thanks too to our newest super volunteer Carol who scouts properties for us in Ventura and points north.

Our Ventura County branch hit a record 50,000 lbs picked in early July and we haven’t looked back! VC didn’t glean that much for all of 2011!

All of us at Food Forward are excited to be closing in on 1,000,000 lbs picked which is forecast to happen in late August. That’s 4 million servings of fresh fruit and vegetables.

We’re blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers who get up early on Saturday mornings to help rescue fruit to feed our county’s needy. Thank you to each and every one of you. We couldn’t do it without you.
