September Volunteer of the Month: Chris Alford!

Every so often willing and dedicated community members step to the plate and dedicate themselves to a beneficial cause and Food Forward is so lucky to have such a strong network of community members who want to make an impact. However, there are some volunteers who go well above the expectation, and Chris Alford is one of them! This month we proudly honor Chris Alford as our September Volunteer of the Month. Chris has been picking with us for quite some time and it is a pleasure to have him no matter the fruit tree challenge. He is what we like to call a Power Picker! Chris is a rock star as he’s always willing to climb, jump, and hang for those nearly impossible to get pieces. He has an amazing spirit, bringing a can-do attitude to every pick he attends. He is a fruitastic addition to our Food Forward family, so we thank you Chris for your dedication to feeding those in need. Now onto some words from Chris himself…

“As a child, I knew the empty feeling of opening a refrigerator and not seeing much other than condiments like ketchup and mustard.  Perhaps, that is why food is such an integral part of my life today. For me, one of the greatest pleasures is enjoying a fresh picked piece of fruit, with the juice running down my arm. Even in a city like LA, with an abundance of fruit trees, many people still go without fresh produce. As a Food Forward volunteer, I can do something truly hands-on to provide fresh food for those in need. And, without people thinking I’m a nut, I can also relive one of my favorite childhood pastimes, climbing trees. What could be better?”
