SEPTEMBER FRESH JUICE IS POURED

The Last Drops of Summer Juice…

Howdy Juice Addicts:

As we turn the corner towards the last weeks of summer and with autumn already in sight, we mourn the shortening days – and the last full month of our beloved Sunset Picks for the year – but we continue to celebrate the abundance that is Fruitland.

To ensure the party keeps moving and the juices stay flowing, we are in the midst of celebrating our Sip To Share the Abundance promotion at three very generous LA-area restaurants – Mezze (West Hollywood,) Wood & Vine (Hollywood,) and The Charleston (Santa Monica.)  These fine cocktail-savvy establishments are DONATING 50% OF THE PRICE OF THEIR CITRUS-INSPIRED LIBATIONS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 24 DIRECTLY TO FOOD FORWARD. To dig into this promo we are organizing Happy Hours to Fight Hunger over the next two Fridays and we hope you’ll join us to kick start your weekends and enjoy some great cocktails:

·      WOOD & VINE 6280 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood 90029 – ask for a Kiki(Friday Aug. 31st 6-8PM)

·      THE CHARLESTON 2460 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica 90403 – ask for a Grapefruit Forward (Friday Sept. 7th 6-8PM)

·      MEZZE at 401 N. La Cienega  LA 90048 was where we kicked things off last week. – ask for the Grapefruit Sergio

But if you can’t join us, bring your pals in to ANY OF THE THREE above restaurants ANYTIME through September 24th, and order one of their featured cocktails to ensure we get the donation.

We’d like to take our hats off to Chris Alford – our Volunteer of the Month – who has been picking with us rain or shine for nearly three years.  Read all about him on our blog.

Hats off also to our weeks-old Farmers Market Recovery Program and their fab-o ever-expanding GLEAN TEAM which in just three afternoons gleaned over 3200 pounds of top grade produce from the Santa Monica and Studio City Farmers Market – 100% of which has gone to agencies just 3-5 miles from the markets themselves.  How’s that for local?!

There are still a couple of volunteer spots open at the Santa Monica Wednesday market – each position offers a monthly stipend and is the perfect way for students, stay at home moms n’ dads, or food-savvy folks with free Wednesdays to get involved in fighting hunger in the communities.  For more info and to request an application, please email fmrecovery@foodforward.org.

Lastly, in case you have not picked up one of our very limited edition Million Pound Bandanas they are flying off the trees. Designed especially for us by artist Jessica Rodrigue, these modern/vintage mash-ups are taking fashionistas by storm.

Available in navy and brown for only $10 – when they are gone, they are gone. (For those who read Fresh Juice carefully – there will be free bandanas given to  the first 5 Fruit Loops who show up to one of our Happy Hours in the next two weeks).

And now on to the September pulp – which includes the first pomegranates and figs of the season and a whole-new-sort-of attack on the CSUN Orchard…
