The Farmers Market Recovery Program is a new initiative by Food Forward to administer a volunteer-‐based, reliable, systematized collection of produce from farmers at the end of markets that would otherwise go to waste, 100% of which will then be donated to agencies serving those in need. We are getting this program started in August 2012 and will be at the Santa Monica Wednesday Market,Studio City Sunday Market and Hollywood Sunday Market. We are looking for 4 – 6 reliable Gleaners for each market that can commit to 3 hours, twice a month for at least 6 months (or 1 semester).
This is a great opportunity for students in need of community service hours or internship credit, recent college grads trying to get involved in the Los Angeles food community, or folks already involved in their community but looking for a deeper connection to farmers, food justice or hunger relief efforts.
Hours: 3 hours a week, twice monthly
Compensation: $50 monthly stipend is provided for transportation & others expenses.
Description: Food Forward is seeking Gleaners/Ambassadors to implement the new Farmer’s Market Recovery Program. Gleaners will have the opportunity to develop deep relationships with their local farmer’s market, the farmers and local agencies serving the hungry. Working with us twice per month during market hours, Gleaners will be responsible for cultivating relationships with farmers, collecting their produce donations, keeping records of those donations and speaking about Food Forward’s mission and goals. Gleaners will also interact with Food Forward’s selected hunger relief agencies to hand off all gleaned produce at the end of market.
This position is very exciting way for those looking to get more involved with their community, local market and farmers.
Responsibilities: Volunteers will be responsible for arriving at their designated market 1.5 hrs before the end of market and setting up the collection space with a table, banner and collection equipment.
Towards the end of market, Gleaners will interact with farmers and the public, distribute and collect crates and keep records of the donations.
At the end of market, Gleaners will aggregate the produce and hand it off to the designated hunger relief agency. It’s that simple!
Requirements: Gleaners should be customer-focused and have the ability to relate to groups and individuals in the farmer’s market/food recovery arena. Gleaners should be self-motivating, self-directing and capable of working independently. Gleaners should also have a positive, can-do attitude, enthusiasm and lots of energy! Gleaners will be Food Forward ambassadors and should feel comfortable and excited to talk about our mission and work.
Gleaner must be able to arrive on time to his/her local farmer’s market and be able to lift crates of produce and equipment weighing up to forty (40) lbs.
Spanish is helpful but not required.
If you’re interested in joining the Glean Team please email us at FMRecovery@foodforward.org and we will forward you a formal application by early – mid August.
